The USC Upstate women’s soccer team claimed the Big South Conference regular season championship on Wednesday evening. The Spartans defeated Gardner-Webb 4-0 at Greene-Harbison Field, a result that locked in their position at the top of the conference standings.

With the win, the team improved its overall record to 12-2-4. It also completed its Big South schedule with a perfect 7-0-1 mark. That performance earned the squad the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big South Women’s Soccer Championship.

Jasmyn Mitchner led the scoring with two goals. Annabelle Wunderlich contributed a goal and two assists for a four-point line. Liana Bryant also scored, marking her 10th goal of the season. The Spartans outshot the Runnin’ Bulldogs 10-4 during the match.

Mitchner broke the deadlock in the 14th minute. She finished a play set up by Raegan Bell and Wunderlich to give Upstate an early 1-0 lead. Wunderlich extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 23rd minute after converting a penalty kick. The Spartans entered the halftime break with a two-goal cushion and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Bryant scored the third goal in the 72nd minute. Assists from Wunderlich and Giulia Altomare set up the play. Mitchner added the final goal in the 86th minute to seal the 4-0 shutout. Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt made two saves to keep the clean sheet.

The team will now compete in the conference tournament semifinals. Tickets for those games are currently on sale. The Spartans will aim to carry their unbeaten conference record into the postseason bracket.
