The Oklahoma City Thunder will retire Russell Westbrook's number 0 jersey on February 7, the team announced on Monday. The ceremony is scheduled for a home matchup against the New York Knicks. Westbrook, who is 37 years old, spent 11 of his 18 professional seasons with the franchise before retiring.
Westbrook holds the franchise records for games played (821), points (18,859), rebounds (5,760), assists (6,897), steals (1,442), field goals made (6,626), and minutes played (28,329). His tenure helped the Thunder achieve a .607 winning percentage, which is the third-best record in NBA history. The team reached the NBA Finals in 2012 and qualified for the playoffs in nine separate seasons.
The guard earned the league's Most Valuable Player award for the 2016-17 season. He averaged 31.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 10.4 assists, and 1.63 steals per game during that year. He became the second player in NBA history to average a triple-double over an entire season. His 42 triple-doubles in 2016-17 set a single-season record, and his career total of 209 remains the all-time mark.
Thunder general manager Sam Presti said Westbrook's influence extended beyond statistics. "Many players make an impact but only great players leave a legacy," Presti stated. "Russell Westbrook’s legacy was built both on the court and in the community." Presti noted that Oklahomans view Westbrook as one of their own.
The team will raise the jersey to the rafters during the February 7 game. Westbrook's final season with Oklahoma City ended in 2024, capping a career that included four Western Conference Finals appearances.
