House Democrats hold a nine-point advantage on the generic ballot, a margin driven largely by President Donald Trump’s low approval ratings.

This lead positions the party near the largest popular vote margin in decades. No party has won the House popular vote by at least 10 points in a midterm since 1986.

The path to a majority requires winning 218 seats, but the complexity of 435 individual races makes tracking progress difficult.

Specific district outcomes will determine if Democrats are simply winning their expected seats or building a larger coalition.

Several races serve as early indicators of the party’s strength. California’s 1st District favors Democrats by 12 points, making it a likely pickup against Representative James Gallagher. Nebraska’s 2nd District is another probable win, with moderate Republican Don Bacon retiring and the Omaha area district leaning blue. In New Jersey’s 7th District, signs point to a Democratic victory after Republican Tom Kean Jr. took a months-long leave for depression treatment and a major Republican super PAC pulled its funding.

Seats in Arizona’s 6th, Iowa’s 3rd, and Texas’ 34th districts will confirm if Democrats can clear the threshold for a majority. Representative Juan Ciscomani in Arizona missed a recent Trump rally, while Representative Zach Nunn in Iowa voted to limit the president’s war powers in September. In Texas, Representative Vicente Gonzalez holds a district that polls show has shifted back toward Democrats despite redistricting efforts by Speaker Mike Johnson.

Larger waves are indicated by results in Kentucky’s 6th, Montana’s 1st, and Pennsylvania’s 1st districts. Kentucky’s 6th district, a Trump plus 15 district, is in play because Republican nominee Ralph Alvarado distanced himself from the president in August. Montana’s 1st district features a competitive open seat race, while Pennsylvania’s 1st district tests the resilience of moderate incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick. Even deeper shifts are suggested by Colorado’s 4th, Missouri’s 2nd, and New York’s 21st districts, where incumbents Lauren Boebert, Ann Wagner, and retiring Elise Stefanik face challenges.

The most dramatic results would come from Kansas’s 2nd, Texas’ 9th, and Wyoming’s at-large districts. These are deep red districts where Trump won by 20 or more points. A Democratic victory in any of these areas, particularly Wyoming’s at-large race where the margin was 46 points in 2024, would signal a historic shift in the midterms.
