Poland Sends Elite Troops to Border After Intelligence Warnings
Security forces mobilized in the northeast to guard against potential sabotage or armed incursions from the Kaliningrad exclave.

Polish security forces moved into position along the eastern border this week after intelligence agencies warned of imminent threats from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The operation targets the shared border between Poland and the exclave, a region that serves as a critical choke point for NATO logistics. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the rapid deployment likely stopped a planned sabotage or provocation against the NATO member state.
The security initiative launched on Monday and is scheduled to run until at least November 8. National Police Chief Marek Boroń announced the mission in a public address, confirming that the effort involves a substantial increase in resources. The deployment includes additional police personnel, counterterrorism units, and troops from GROM, Poland’s elite military special forces unit.
Intelligence warnings from Poland and its allies had flagged the first half of November as a high-risk period. The alerts specifically identified the risk of armed groups attempting to cross from Kaliningrad into Polish territory. These warnings prompted domestic security agencies to raise alert levels before the extra forces arrived in the Warmia-Masuria and Podlaskie regions.
Tusk addressed the public on Tuesday regarding suspicious activity observed near the border overnight. He described seeing individuals carrying flashlights in close proximity to the border area. While the prime minister believes the quick mobilization prevented an unspecified provocation, he acknowledged that authorities cannot fully confirm the exact nature of the threat.
"We very quickly mobilized the necessary security forces and means on site, and we successfully prevented any attempted acts of provocation, if that was the intention. Of course, we will never be able to completely confirm that," Tusk said. He added that intelligence pointed to possible acts of diversion or more serious provocation against the European Union, including the intrusion of armed individuals into Polish territory.
A special command center was established at the national police headquarters to coordinate the operation. The primary goals are to protect the public, detect suspicious activities early, and prevent attacks on critical infrastructure. Police officials emphasized that the measure is proactive, designed to maintain stability in the region rather than reacting to an ongoing crisis.
Kaliningrad holds strategic importance because it is bordered only by NATO members Poland and Lithuania, with the Baltic Sea to the west. Russian security agencies, including the FSB and GRU, are widely believed to maintain a presence in the territory. The Suwałki Corridor lies immediately to the east, serving as the only land border connecting the Baltic NATO states with the rest of the alliance.
Polish authorities had not published specific evidence of a planned attack by Tuesday afternoon. However, the alert follows months of low-level incidents across Europe often blamed on Russia, including sabotage and air incursions. In October, Tusk discussed his concerns with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Alexus Grynkewich, citing increasing threats involving aircraft and border crossings.
Sir Ken McCallum, head of Britain’s MI5, recently described a dark security picture for Europe. He stated that Russia remains the primary aggressor, warning that Russian services are escalating hybrid warfare while staying below the NATO Article 5 threshold. McCallum noted that Moscow is using tactics that stop short of conventional conflict.
Recent incidents in Europe include a fire at a Polish drone factory in August and an arson attack on a Starlink station in September, which officials attributed to Russia. Russian drones have repeatedly crossed into NATO airspace in Eastern Europe. This week, the U.K. Royal Navy intercepted a Russian spy ship off Scotland, where it was monitoring a nearby NATO exercise.
