The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Tuesday night in a game decided in the final minute of regulation. Tomas Hertl scored his second goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining to secure the win for the visiting team.
The winning play came immediately after the Penguins failed to kill a late 5-on-3 power play. Hertl tipped a pass from Mark Stone past Pittsburgh goaltender Arturs Silovs. This marked the second power-play goal the Penguins allowed at home in the game and the second time Hertl scored on the power play that night.
The Penguins had briefly taken the lead in the third period. Tommy Novak and Rickard Rakell scored to erase a one-goal deficit. Trevor Connelly tied the score at 2-2 with a breakaway goal when 8:41 remained in the game. Novak was called for tripping shortly after the teams returned to even strength, setting the stage for the final penalty.
Adin Hill stopped 23 shots for Vegas. Silovs faced 20 shots for Pittsburgh. The loss extended the Penguins' slide to seven defeats in their last nine games. It was only the second time in franchise history that Vegas won in Pittsburgh.
Hertl's goal in the late first period was the only score for 40 minutes. Mitch Marner provided the primary assist, extending his points streak to 11 games. The Penguins played without forward Evgeni Malkin, who sat out due to a lower-body injury. Captain Sidney Crosby did not record a point in the loss.
The teams are scheduled to play again in about two weeks. The Golden Knights will continue their road trip against Detroit on Thursday. The Penguins will host Boston at PPG Paints Arena on the same day.
