The Charlotte Lifters Club at UNC Charlotte is raising funds to purchase specialized powerlifting equipment and cover travel expenses for student athletes. The crowdfunding campaign, which launched in October, has already secured 40% of its $2,500 goal in less than one week. The deadline for contributions is Friday, Nov. 6, via the university's crowdfunding platform.

Alan Guzman, a junior finance and accounting major who serves as club president, stated that the organization aims to bridge the gap between individual competition and collective support. "Powerlifting is an individual sport but despite this, we make it our mission to provide competitors an environment to grow internally and within the sport," Guzman said. He noted that the lasting value of the team lies in the connections formed among members.

The primary use of the raised funds is the acquisition of competition-specific gear. This equipment is designed to replicate the tools used in official regional and national meets. By training on these specific items, athletes can better prepare for the physical demands of higher-level competitions. The club competes against both club and varsity-level teams from universities across the country.

Ava Faugno, a senior finance major and club treasurer, explained that the fundraising effort addresses financial barriers within the sport. "Fundraising helps us reduce some financial barriers that are associated with the sport and allows us to invest directly in our members and their goals," Faugno said. Any money remaining after the purchase of equipment will be allocated to travel costs for athletes who qualify for external meets.

The club has established a consistent track record of sending athletes to the national stage since beginning competition within its federation. Each year, members have represented UNC Charlotte in these high-level events. This competitive output is a result of the club's focus on providing structured opportunities for students to train and compete at a high level.

Unlike many traditional student organizations, the Lifters combine individual achievement with team strategy. The group emphasizes personal growth and community building alongside athletic performance. Members work to create a welcoming environment where students can develop confidence and support one another both inside and outside the gym.

Guzman emphasized that the club is more than a sports team. "I hope that people can recognize that we are more than just a powerlifting team," he said. He described the members as a dedicated group focused on helping teammates become the best version of themselves in all areas of their lives.

The organization views this fundraising campaign as a chance to build lasting relationships with supporters. Establishing a foundation for future fundraising efforts is a secondary goal for the club leadership. The campaign is currently active on the university's crowdfunding site, where other student groups also seek community support.
