President Donald Trump said the objective of the U.S.-led war against Iran has been achieved, while average gasoline prices reached $4.20 a gallon and diesel sold above $6. The war began February 28 and has affected fuel supply through continued Iranian activity in the Strait of Hormuz, according to AAA data.
Trump's stated aim when launching the operation was preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. At a campaign rally, he said, "We obliterated Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation Midnight Hammer, Operation Epic Fury," adding that Iran was defeated "militarily, financially and otherwise."
On October 10, White House correspondent Jon Decker asked the president why he had not declared victory. Trump replied, "Because I have to keep it that way. I don't want to do it in two years. We have to have a guarantee that they won't do it in the future."
Gas prices have risen 40% since the conflict began, and voters surveyed in key Senate races named food and energy costs as leading concerns. Diesel, used by truckers and farmers, averages more than $6 per gallon, per AAA.
Trump has told reporters prices will fall once the war ends. Fighting between the U.S. and Iran continues, and the conflict is entering its ninth month.
