The Madrid to Seville high-speed rail corridor is the busiest passenger route in Spain. On Wednesday morning, a collision between two trains on that route killed at least ten people and shut down the line.

The crash occurred in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Mora, Orgaz, and Urda, according to the railway infrastructure manager ADIF. Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, told local news outlet CMM Noticias that one train carried 146 passengers and an infant. The other train carried 397 passengers. The exact number of injuries is not yet confirmed.

State-owned operator Renfe ran one of the trains. Private operator Iryo ran the other. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the event as a serious incident. He posted on X that emergency services are on the ground to assist those affected. Sánchez added that he sends his affection, solidarity, and support to the victims and their families.

Local officials are coordinating the response on the ground. Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, told radio station Cadena Ser that authorities are preparing a facility to receive potential injured people. This setup follows a request from the Civil Protection agency. Jesús Pérez Martín, the mayor of Los Yébenes, spoke to TVE España about the limited information available. He noted, We have very little information; I’ve been told it’s a serious accident.

The suspension of the high-speed line separates the Madrid region from southern Andalusia. The route normally carries a high volume of daily commuters and travelers. ADIF confirmed the collision location within the Toledo province boundaries. The extent of the physical damage to the rolling stock remains under assessment.
