North Carolina State University suspended the Sigma Nu Beta Tau chapter on Tuesday after determining the group violated the student code of conduct. The suspension occurred while the NC State University Police conducted a criminal investigation into hazing allegations against the fraternity.
University officials stated that both the university and the national fraternity organization paused the Beta Tau chapter's activities pending the outcome of the investigation. The national Sigma Nu organization issued a statement noting that the fraternity was founded in direct opposition to hazing practices.
Reporters visited the Sigma Nu house on Tuesday to seek comment, but no one answered the door. Campus police did not respond to questions regarding potential arrests, the filing of a police report, or the expected timeline for the criminal case.
Students involved in Greek life reported that the allegations have sparked widespread discussion across campus. Levi Miller, a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, said the incident highlights the importance of the anti-hazing education required of all Greek organizations.
"They have to do hazing modules every semester just to make sure they keep up and understand that, like, we really shouldn't be acting on that and then it shouldn't have happened, period," Miller said.
Ben Nguyn, an NC State student, expressed concern that the scandal affects the perception of all fraternities. He cited a personal example where his best friend left his fraternity after a member suffered alcohol poisoning from drinking a large amount of liquor as directed by other members.
"With everything, there is good and bad. My best friend left the frat because someone in his frat got alcohol poisoning because they drunk too much because their frat bros told him to chug this crazy amount," Nguyn said.
