At least 10 people died in a rear-end collision between two high-speed trains in Toledo province, central Spain. The crash occurred on the rail line connecting Madrid and Seville on Wednesday morning.

Spain’s state rail infrastructure authority, Adif, suspended services between Madrid and the southern region of Andalucía following the accident. TVE reported that one train struck the rear of another, causing two carriages to derail.

Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, confirmed the death toll to local media. “The information we are receiving is not good at all. There are at least 10 dead and it is possible that the number will increase,” she said.

Government sources told El País that the accident could prove worse than the Adamuz rail disaster in January, which claimed 46 lives. Footage from regional television showed twisted metal and broken panels scattered across the embankment below the elevated track. At least one carriage remained on the line.

Manuel Galán, mayor of Urda, stated that emergency services asked him to prepare a local sports hall for the injured. The crash interrupted the daily routine of a region preparing for the upcoming general election.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on X that he was in constant contact with the transport minister and the regional president. He noted that emergency teams were coordinating with administrations to assist those affected. “My love, solidarity and support to all the victims and their families,” he wrote.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the opposition People’s Party, also posted on X. He described the party as “very concerned” about the new rail accident and said the priority was to attend to victims and support their families.
