Myles Garrett returned to practice this week after sitting out the first seven games of the season with a knee injury. The reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year has not recorded a sack or a tackle for the Los Angeles Rams yet. His return comes as the defense posts its best statistical stretch of the year without him.

The Rams (4-4) held opponents out of the end zone for the second time in three games during a 24-9 comeback win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. The unit has allowed just two touchdowns over this three-game span. Both scores came in the fourth quarter of a lopsided victory in Las Vegas.

The Rams have moved to fifth in the NFL with 301 yards allowed per game. This improvement occurred while star cornerback Trent McDuffie missed the first two games with a groin injury and played only about half of the recent slate. McDuffie recorded an interception against the Chargers before leaving the game with a back issue that does not appear serious.

Coach Sean McVay acknowledged the offensive struggles that required defensive stability. The Rams started with five consecutive three-and-outs for just 24 total yards. McVay said the defense kept the team in the game through consistent stops. The Chargers managed only three field goals before Matthew Stafford’s offense gained traction.

Byron Young, the team’s leading sack producer, noted that the group is playing more together. He stated that the defense performs best when facing adversity. The recent opponents included the Cardinals and Raiders, who do not represent the toughest schedule. However, the unit needed this break to rebuild confidence after earlier losses to Brock Purdy and Josh Allen.

Garrett’s return will make the unit more complete if McDuffie and cornerback Jaylen Watson stay healthy. Watson aggravated a shoulder injury against the Chargers. Both players arrived in the offseason to strengthen the secondary. When healthy, they have been the two best players on the defense.

Aaron Donald has re-established a prominent role on the interior line after two and a half years of retirement. He has no sack in six games but is helping cover for the absence of nose tackle Poona Ford. The Rams also appear ready to open the practice window for tight end Terrance Ferguson, who has an ankle injury.

The Rams travel to Washington this weekend and to Arizona next week. These games precede a shortened bye week. Wins in this segment of the schedule are vital for playoff hopes and preparation for a tougher slate in December.
