DeSoto County Sheriff James Potter called the discovery of inmate images on an agency computer "extremely disturbing" during a Monday announcement. The sheriff’s office fired Deputy Douglas Chirinos and booked him into the DeSoto County Jail following a review of his digital activity. Chirinos had served with the department since 2025.
The DeSoto County IT department flagged a potential security breach on Oct. 23. Investigators suspected Chirinos of downloading prohibited programs onto a shared agency computer. This action violated internal policy and triggered a deeper look at the device.
During the review, officials located several screenshots taken from surveillance cameras. The images showed partially nude female inmates. Some of these files also included details from criminal cases that Chirinos did not need to access for his duties.
Chirinos bypassed security protocols to enter the user accounts of other agency employees. He was charged with offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks, and electronic devices without authorization. This charge constitutes a third-degree felony.
Sheriff Potter stated, "This is unacceptable, and he will be held accountable for his actions." Detectives are currently identifying affected victims to notify them. Authorities have not yet released the total number of inmates involved or the duration of the unauthorized access.
