Chris Sale struck out 200 batters this season, a mark that secured his place as a finalist for the National League Cy Young Award. MLB Network announced the nominations on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old left-hander shares the honors with Milwaukee Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski and Philadelphia Phillies southpaw Cristopher Sánchez. Sale delivered a 2.16 earned run average over 162.2 innings. His performance contributed to the Atlanta Braves recording the fifth-best team ERA in baseball at 3.63.
Sale anchored a rotation that suffered numerous injuries during a 94-win campaign. He worked alongside Bryce Elder, Grant Holmes, Martin Perez, and Tyler Mahle. Their combined effort helped the Braves capture the National League East title.
A complete-game shutout against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 27 drew attention to Sale’s resurgence. That game featured 11 strikeouts. It followed a period from 2020 to 2023 where injuries limited him to 151 innings. Sale won the Cy Young Award in 2024 after leading MLB with 18 wins and a 2.38 ERA.
Misiorowski enters the voting as the favorite. He holds a 16-5 record with a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 174.2 innings across 30 starts. Sale signed a one-year contract extension in February worth $27 million. The deal includes a club option for $30 million in 2028.
The BBWAA will announce the Cy Young Award winner on Nov. 11. Braves manager Walt Weiss is also a finalist for NL Manager of the Year. That decision will be made on Nov. 10. Weiss replaced Brian Snitker and led the team to its first division title since 2023.
