The race to define the next generation of artificial intelligence has narrowed significantly around the concept of the autonomous agent. As the market saturates with new tools, Anthropic’s latest release marks a strategic pivot away from general conversational assistants toward specialized professional utility.

The competitive landscape for AI assistants has expanded rapidly over recent months. Established players have already entered the space, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. This week, Anthropic joined that crowded field with the launch of Claude Duet. The company is positioning this new application as a distinct alternative to existing personal agents, which often prioritize casual tasks like booking tickets or handling errands. Duet is explicitly designed for professionals and small businesses that require robust task management and automation capabilities.

Unlike its predecessors, Duet does not attempt to mimic human browsing behavior in real-time. Instead, it operates through a virtual machine that executes tasks in the background while the user continues with other work. The system is built to proactively monitor ongoing projects, build daily briefings, and generate dashboards based on user data. It will return to the user only when specific approvals are required, such as for sensitive financial actions.

The scale of Duet’s integration capabilities is its primary differentiator. Powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model, the agent connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive network allows the software to interact with a wide variety of professional tools. Furthermore, Duet can execute online purchases using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, although it is not designed to trade securities or transfer funds between bank accounts.

Security and privacy remain central to the product’s architecture. Anthropic introduced a new classifier that scans each message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent is configured to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification numbers. This approach aims to address common concerns regarding data exposure in automated workflows.

Currently, Claude Duet is available in a research preview for Pro and Max customers. Access is restricted to iOS and Android apps, as well as the web interface on Claude.ai. Users must join a waitlist to gain entry, suggesting that Anthropic is managing rollout carefully to ensure stability before a broader public launch.

The move reflects a broader industry shift where AI companies are moving beyond simple chat interfaces toward agents that act on behalf of users. By focusing on business use cases and deep integration, Anthropic is betting that professional users will value utility and connectivity over the novelty of a general-purpose assistant. The success of Duet will likely depend on how effectively it can manage the complexity of connecting thousands of disparate services into a coherent workflow.
