Wolves Emerge From Cleared Finnish Forests
Forest clearings for data centers have pushed wildlife into nearby residential areas.

Wolves are now walking into Finnish villages.
Google's country manager in Finland has apologized for unauthorized forest clearings near Muhos. As a result, 816 acres of woods are now a muddy wasteland. The company has also been ordered to halt work in another area. That location is 55 miles southeast of Otanmäki. There, roughly 500 acres of forest have been cleared. Local anger over the damage is high.
The clearings have displaced wildlife. The forests that once belonged to wolf packs are gone. Animals are moving out of the woods. This includes wolves. Anni Ranta, 53, who lives in Otanmäki, explained the situation. “We had wolves coming into the village because all the wild animals moved out of the forest,” she said. Her family has lived in the area for generations. The arrival of wild animals in residential areas is a safety concern. Ranta also expressed fear about the data centers. She worries they will make Finland a more likely target for Russian aggression.
Other environmental issues have been reported. Some locals complain about the noise from construction. Others note that streams have turned brown. Rare birds have also been pushed out of the area. A representative for the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (SLL) commented on the situation. They told The Guardian that Google's disregard for environmental policy has been unprecedented. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) issued a stop-work order. This order applies to development near Muhos and Otanmäki.
Google has responded to the order. A company spokesperson said, “We will fully comply with LVV’s requests in this matter.” They also said, “We look forward to maintaining an active, open dialogue with all authorities to strengthen our partnership with Finland and local organizations.” The LVV gave notice to stop construction activities in Muhos and Kajaani earlier this month. Kajaani is near Otanmäki.
Similar environmental concerns have been voiced across the U.S. and in other countries. Google is building AI data centers to support its operations. The company is moving quickly to construct these facilities in Finland. However, the process has led to conflict with local regulations. The clearings have destroyed natural habitats. The resulting change has altered the behavior of local wildlife. Wolves are now a common sight in nearby villages.
The situation highlights the impact of new technology projects on the environment. Data centers are essential for artificial intelligence development. Their construction requires land. In Finland, this land has been taken from forests. The loss of these forests has changed the local ecosystem. Animals that lived there have been forced to move. This has led to increased contact between wildlife and people. Local authorities and environmental groups are watching the situation closely. Google must follow the orders given by the LVV. The company's work in Finland will continue to be monitored.
