Actor Walter Koenig died on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood. His representative confirmed that he was 90 years old and passed away from natural causes.
Koenig is best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov on Star Trek: The Original Series. He joined the cast in 1967 for the second season. The show aired for three seasons between 1966 and 1969. Koenig later appeared in six Star Trek films with his former castmates.
William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, posted a tribute on X on Tuesday. Shatner said he was deeply saddened by the news. He noted that the two men were not close friends outside of their work. However, they shared the later seasons of the original series and the subsequent movies.
Shatner described Koenig as a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community. He observed that Koenig rarely stayed behind a signing table at conventions. Instead, the actor preferred to mingle with the fans who supported the franchise for decades. Shatner called that kind of connection rare and memorable for everyone who met him.
George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu for all three seasons of the original series, also honored his former colleague. In a Facebook post on Monday, Takei emphasized that Koenig was more than his television character. He described Koenig as a writer, a teacher, and a thoughtful man.
Takei expressed gratitude to the fans who loved Koenig for so many years. He stated that Koenig loved them in return. The post ended with a farewell to his dear friend, asking him to keep navigating a steady course.
Koenig’s death marks the end of a career that spanned several decades in science fiction television and film. His portrayal of the young Russian ensign remains a defining element of the original Star Trek series.
