OpenAI is reportedly finalizing a new round of private financing that could raise as much as $30 billion. The company aims to secure this capital at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion. Sources indicate that the firm is working closely with the investment firm Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates to close this deal. This move suggests that the AI lab prefers to continue growing through private equity rather than immediately launching an initial public offering.
This latest development follows earlier reports from a month ago. At that time, Bloomberg indicated that OpenAI was pursuing a similar $30 billion raise but at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Since terms are still under negotiation, the final numbers may shift. The current reports suggest that the funding from UAE-based investors might be linked to a separate agreement. Under such a deal, OpenAI would secure additional computing capacity from the region, a critical resource for training its large language models.
The timeline of OpenAI’s financial growth has been rapid. In March of this year, the company completed a previous funding round that valued it at $852 billion on a post-money basis. Shortly after, in June, OpenAI filed confidential paperwork with regulators to prepare for a potential public offering. If the current round succeeds at the reported valuation, OpenAI would surpass the $1 trillion mark. This achievement would make it the most valuable private company in history, setting a new benchmark for the tech sector.
A valuation exceeding $1 trillion carries significant implications for OpenAI’s future listing. By establishing such a high price point in the private markets, the company raises the bar for its upcoming IPO. Investors will likely expect the public market debut to meet or exceed this private valuation. This strategy allows OpenAI to lock in capital before exposing its financials to public scrutiny. The company declined to comment on the current negotiations.
The move also creates a ripple effect for its primary competitor, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe that Anthropic is close to launching its own IPO. Recent reports suggest that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut. The company recently raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, which many viewed as its final major private round before going public. Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June. If OpenAI reaches the $1.25 trillion mark, it may pressure Anthropic to justify its higher projected valuation to incoming public investors.
The outcome of these negotiations will define the landscape for AI funding in the coming year. Both companies are vying for the title of the most valuable AI firm. The interplay between their private rounds and public filings will determine how much capital the sector can attract. For now, the focus remains on whether OpenAI can close this round with UAE partners and how that deal affects its computing infrastructure.
