John Goodman has signed on to star in the second season of "The Beast in Me" on Netflix. The announcement confirms the veteran actor's role as Jack, the father of Aggie Wiggs, a character Claire Danes is set to reprise in the upcoming installment.
The series was officially renewed in September, following a first season that originally launched in 2024 as a limited series. While exact plot details for the new season remain confidential, the show has shifted from its initial format to a continuing series model, a move similar to other Netflix dramas like "Big Little Lies."
Goodman brings extensive television experience to the production. He has received eleven Emmy nominations, including seven for his work on the sitcom "Roseanne." He won the award for outstanding guest actor in a drama in 2007 for "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip." More recently, he returned to the "Roseanne" universe for the revival, which was rebranded as "The Conners" and ran for seven additional seasons.
The actor is also recognized for his work in "The Righteous Gemstones" on HBO and "Damages" on FX. In film, he has frequently collaborated with the Coen brothers, appearing in projects such as "Raising Arizona," "Barton Fink," "The Big Lebowski," and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" He has also acted in films like "Argo" and "Flight."
The creative leadership for Season 2 includes Howard Gordon, who served as showrunner for the first season, now acting as co-showrunner. He will work alongside Daniel Pearle, an executive producer on the initial run. Gabe Rotter remains the creator and an executive producer. Danes will continue to executive produce the series in addition to her starring role.
The first season of "The Beast in Me" was a recipient of two Emmy Awards this year. Matthew Rhys, who starred in Season 1, won the award for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series. The show also took home the prize for outstanding music composition for a limited or anthology series. The series is produced by 20th Television, with an executive producer list that includes Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Conan O'Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, and Jodie Foster.
Goodman is represented by Gersh and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz. The casting news solidifies the core family dynamic for the return of the drama, with Danes and Goodman set to anchor the narrative as the story expands beyond its original limited series scope.
