North Texas Congressman Keith Self is navigating a tense period in his reelection campaign after federal authorities arrested a local teenager. The suspect, a 17-year-old from McKinney, is accused of plotting to assassinate the Republican lawmaker. Self’s campaign officials confirmed the details to NBC 5, noting that the arrest signals a shift in the security posture required for the candidate representing Texas’ third congressional district.

Campaign manager statements indicate the FBI took the teen into custody on Oct. 5. The congressman’s team learned of the detention through U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 6. Investigators told the campaign that the suspect had been radicalized and monitored by federal agents. Reports suggest the teen was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The specific target was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for Oct. 17. That event was to feature former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests.

Self stated that his response was shaped by his military background. He said his experience in combat zones allowed him to remain calm while assessing whether the suspect was a lone wolf. He noted that his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the risks. Self acknowledged receiving threats before, but this incident marked the first time an arrest followed.

The campaign adjusted its situational awareness immediately. Self said they increased their profile and security measures as early voting continued across the state. He attended the targeted chili event as planned and judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He reported that nothing happened during the gathering. Since then, he has continued poll greeting and meeting voters daily.

The political context of the alleged plot is significant. Self has taken a prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing the practice. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. His district includes McKinney, where a unanimous city council vote in August approved a mosque expansion plan. That decision followed contentious public comment and a subsequent effort to recall several council members.

Self’s opponent, Evan Hunt, condemned the plot on social media. The teen’s identity has not been publicly released as the investigation continues. The FBI Dallas office has not yet responded to requests for further information.

Self stated that the incident will not deter his campaigning. He plans to continue alerting voters to what he describes as a political ideology. The campaign views the arrest as a serious development but maintains that their core activities will proceed without interruption.
