Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday morning with his wife and two daughters, completing a multi-leg journey that began days after he rejected the results of Brazil's presidential election. The family stepped off a Gulfstream G400 private jet at the Miami-Opa Locka airport, marking a physical exit from the country following a disputed vote.
The decision to leave Brazil became public late Tuesday, shortly after Bolsonaro announced he would contest the election outcome. He did not comply with a directive from Brazil's Supreme Court requiring him to hand over his passports. That court order is connected to an ongoing money-laundering investigation, a case in which Bolsonaro claims he is innocent. The United States State Department subsequently confirmed it would issue visas to him and his immediate family.
The travel route involved a stop in Argentina late Tuesday, followed by a flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador, before the final leg to Florida. According to the AFP news agency, Bolsonaro holds Italian citizenship, which permitted the family to travel internationally even after his Brazilian and diplomatic passports were canceled. His legislative immunity from prosecution is scheduled to expire in February, coinciding with the end of his Senate term.
The move contradicted statements made earlier in the week. On Monday, Bolsonaro posted on Instagram that he had no plans to depart the country. He wrote that he intended to hand over his passports and defend himself against what he called a travesty and an attempt to intimidate him.
The arrival in Florida may strain diplomatic relations between the two largest nations in the Americas. Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of colluding with the Bolsonaro family during the campaign. After the vote was counted, Trump questioned the integrity of the process, specifically criticizing the extension of voting hours. He has previously described Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio's father, as a victim of judicial persecution in Brazil.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently detained in Brazil, where he faces charges related to a conspiracy to retain power after losing the 2022 presidential election. His presence in Florida mirrors a pattern established during the previous electoral cycle.
