Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday afternoon. His office confirmed the news on Sunday, stating the lawmaker is expected to make a full recovery.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy's chief of staff, provided details in a written statement. She reported that the senator began feeling numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game. Medical staff at a local hospital identified the event as a stroke. Murphy was subsequently moved to Johns Hopkins for closer observation and is currently responding well to care.
At 53, Murphy holds a high profile within the Democratic Party. He has served as a key campaign surrogate during the midterm cycle and is often discussed as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. His public role focuses on foreign policy and strict oversight of the executive branch.
The stroke occurred shortly after Murphy returned from a multi-stop trip to the Middle East. Following that tour, he warned that President Trump would escalate military action against Iran after the midterm elections concluded.
Murphy joins a list of recent health crises affecting members of Congress this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky spent months in hospital and rehab. Rep. Tom Kean of New Jersey missed the Capitol for several months while treating depression. In 2022, three other prominent Democrats, including Sen. Ben Ray Lujan and former candidate John Fetterman, were hospitalized for strokes.
Herwitt's statement noted that Murphy is in stable condition. The senator's office did not release a specific date for his return to Washington.
