Kevin Bleyer, a veteran television writer and speechwriter, died Sunday in a car accident. His wife, Nella Vera, confirmed the death in an Instagram post, stating that the writer was 54 years old. The collision occurred on a rural road in Millrift, Pennsylvania, according to Variety. Bleyer maintained a residence in that region.

Bleyer built his career in political comedy over three decades. He spent nine years writing for “The Daily Show” alongside host Jon Stewart. Following that run, he served as a writer for “Politically Incorrect” with Bill Maher and Dennis Miller for eight years. His professional accolades include four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Writers Guild Award, and a Peabody Award. Beyond television, he authored books and plays, and he wrote speeches for former President Barack Obama and former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

A Stanford University graduate, Bleyer also worked internationally. His career included assignments in Kenya, Jordan, and Moldova. He lived briefly in Kyrgyzstan, where he executive produced “Studio 7,” described as the first political satire news show in Central Asia. He also worked as a writer and producer for NBC News’ “TODAY” show and CNN.

Vera detailed their personal history in her statement. She met Bleyer in 2010 at a production of “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” at the Public Theater. The couple began dating in 2015 and married in June 2025. Vera described their bond, noting they connected through a shared love of political comedy. She characterized the final eleven years of their relationship as filled with love, laughter, dogs, and travel.

In her tribute, Vera expressed deep grief over the loss. She described herself as devastated and heartbroken, adding that her heart has a hole in it that will never be filled. She highlighted his intellect, wit, and fearless spirit of adventure. She noted that while he achieved many public accomplishments, he was primarily her soulmate and partner in crime to her.

Vera asked the public to honor Bleyer by donating to the Alzheimer’s Association New York City chapter. She stated that he had volunteered for the organization. The statement did not provide further details on the specific circumstances of the crash beyond the location and time of day.

The family has not yet announced plans for a memorial service or funeral. Vera’s post remains the primary source for biographical details and immediate reactions to the death. No official investigation report had been released as of the initial announcements.
