Austin F1 venue adds pools and coasters to hold crowds
Circuit of the Americas is expanding beyond racing to include amusement rides and swimming pools.

Formula One returned to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, this weekend. The venue has transformed from a bare track into a sprawling entertainment complex. It now features two swimming pools and multiple roller coasters alongside the racing circuit.
The track was originally designed by motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz. Herman Tilke’s company handled only the buildings and infrastructure. The layout includes heavy braking zones, challenging corner sequences, and significant elevation changes. It also offers large run-off areas rather than concrete barriers. This design distinguishes it from the temporary street circuits used in Miami and Las Vegas.
COTA has become the most attended of the three US Formula One events. Fans prioritize this permanent track over the street circuits. The venue also hosts World Endurance Championship and IMSA races, including the Lone Star Le Mans event in September.
The expansion includes hospitality structures built on the grassy banks surrounding the track. A cable car connects one of these structures to the paddock building. The new pools are located within these hospitality zones. Roller coasters and amusement rides now line the fringes of the venue.
This growth is part of a diversification strategy. COTA aims to function as a theme park, concert venue, and race track simultaneously. The venue has changed since the first US Grand Prix in 2012. Landscaping has increased, and the skyline is now filled with amusement rides. The site remains a destination for fans who want to attend the race in person.
