The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal aircraft accident in Palm Beach County. A Learjet crashed on Sunday, November 1, killing all nine people on board.
The aircraft was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it went down. The crew reported encountering ice and turbulence before issuing a mayday call. Dash cam footage shows the jet striking the pavement nose-first and exploding. The crash site is located near Lake Worth Beach and Greenacres, roughly four miles south of Palm Beach International Airport.
Air traffic control records indicate the pilot declared an emergency. The pilot reported an overspeed condition and a rapid descent. Final transmissions confirmed a high-rate descent before contact was lost.
Investigators from the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration are on the scene. They are analyzing flight data, weather patterns, and communications to determine if the jet encountered a strong storm cell. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis viewed video of the impact. He described the event as a tragic way for people to pass away. The identities of the nine victims have not been released publicly.
The NTSB scheduled a news conference for 1 p.m. on Monday, November 2. The agency plans to provide additional details on the ongoing investigation.
