Five people sustained gunshot wounds during two separate shootings near the Michigan State University campus on Halloween night. East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown announced the details during a press conference on Sunday afternoon, stating that officers responded to four distinct incidents in the area.
The first incident occurred near the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street, where multiple shots were fired. Three individuals were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Brown reported that two of these victims were in stable condition, while the status of the third patient was not immediately known.
Later that same night, police responded to a second shooting in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot in that incident, and both are now listed in stable condition. Officers recovered several guns from the scene, though officials have not confirmed whether those specific weapons were used in the shootings.
Brown said that several individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not yet determined if the two shootings are linked or if any of the victims are students at Michigan State. A university spokesperson noted that the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted local officers but clarified that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to campus and did not take place on MSU grounds.
The East Lansing Fire Department reported responding to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour period. Of those, 75 occurred during the hours leading up to Halloween night.
