Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history on Sunday, securing the title at age 20 despite finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver crossed the line behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton to lock in the crown with four races still on the calendar. His achievement breaks a record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won the championship at 23 in 2010.
Antonelli’s title also marks a historic return for Italy. He is the first Italian driver to win the F1 championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and team radio channels captured his immediate reaction. Antonelli placed his hands on the steering wheel and his voice cracked as he repeated, "We did it, we did it." He later added, "Thank you so much, we did it, we did it, thank you so much .. thank you."
The path to the title involved a chaotic race in the Mexican capital. The competition stopped on lap 46 after Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall at the first corner due to right-side suspension issues. Cadillac reported that Bottas underwent further medical assessments as a precaution, though he exited the car unaided and waved to fans before leaving the track. The grid restarted with Verstappen leading, followed by Charles Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Lando Norris, and Russell. Verstappen held his advantage to claim his sixth victory at this circuit.
Tension defined the race for Ferrari’s drivers. Hamilton, who took pole position on Saturday, lost the lead on the fourth lap while battling teammate Charles Leclerc. Hamilton briefly left the track, dropping to third. Stewards investigated the maneuver and issued a five-second penalty to Leclerc. Hamilton expressed frustration on the radio, stating, "The stewards are basically handing Charles this win. We agreed in the drivers’ briefing." He added that the penalty allowed Leclerc clean air without managing the car like others, and he believed the position should have been returned directly.
Aston Martin faced its own setbacks. Fernando Alonso retired early from the race due to an engine issue. His teammate Lance Stroll also exited on the seventh lap. Alonso joked after a poor qualifying session that he might skip Mexico for Brazil, a scenario that nearly came true. He said the car failed in qualifying and again in the race, noting, "We had reliability issues at the worst possible time."
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted the national impact of Antonelli’s win. He said, "For 73 years, our country has waited for this moment, and today an entire nation will celebrate one of its own reaching the very pinnacle of our sport." Domenicali described the event as a new chapter in F1 history and expressed confidence that this is the beginning of an extraordinary legacy.
The series will next travel to Brazil and then to Las Vegas. Organizers have noted uncertainty regarding the final two scheduled Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi due to regional instability. Antonelli’s title is now confirmed regardless of the outcomes in those remaining events.
