James Hampton, 18, died early Sunday morning after being shot in the back outside a house party on Barnes Street in Midtown. Atlanta police are treating the incident as a homicide and have not yet named any suspects.
Hampton traveled to the neighborhood specifically to attend the gathering, which was held at a property operating as a short-term rental. His cousin, Shawanna Johnson, described the moment of the tragedy. She said, "He was running and got shot in the back and died."
Neighbors described an unusually heavy presence on the block before the violence erupted. Brad Czerwonky, a resident of the street, noted that vehicles were parked bumper to bumper, with many facing the wrong way and blocking driveways. Czerwonky said, "This wasn't a usual party."
During the shooting, one witness reported hearing approximately 20 gunshots. Another partygoer took cover inside the rental home while the gunfire occurred. A stray bullet struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle nearby. By Sunday afternoon, the street was littered with discarded bottles, and an abandoned pair of shoes remained on the sidewalk.
Johnson remembered Hampton as a quiet leader and a great kid. In the days following his death, his family asked young people to rethink their association with firearms. Johnson said, "Guns kill people and that's what we trying to tell them."
Investigators are currently reviewing evidence from the scene. The family is waiting for police to make an announcement regarding the status of the case.
